So You Think You’re Not Flexible Enough for Yoga? Let’s Talk.
September 29, 2025

If I had a dollar for every time someone said, “I can’t do yoga, I’m not flexible”… well, let’s just say I’d have a lot of dollars!
Here’s the thing: saying you’re too stiff for yoga is like saying you’re too dirty to take a shower. Flexibility isn’t a prerequisite—it’s something yoga helps you develop if your body actually needs it.
The Flexibility Myth
Somewhere along the line, yoga became synonymous with Cirque du Soleil-level contortions. Instagram didn’t help. But here’s the truth: yoga is not about picture-perfect poses.
That’s where I love to highlight one of my favorite distinctions: form vs. function.
- Form is what the pose looks like on the outside. Pretty, symmetrical, often filtered.
- Function is what the pose does for your unique body—building strength, improving mobility, restoring balance, calming your nervous system.
Fun fact: your hamstrings don’t care if they look good on Instagram. They care if you can bend down to pick up your groceries without wincing.
What Yoga Actually Builds
Flexibility? Sure, maybe. But more importantly:
- Strength: Yoga wakes up muscles you didn’t even know you had (hello, glutes).
- Mobility: Healthy, functional range of motion so you can move with ease.
- Balance: Training your nervous system to keep you steady in the literal and figurative wobbly moments.
- Resilience: Learning to breathe through challenge instead of forcing yourself into a shape.
Why Flexibility is Overrated
Here’s the Truth: Too much flexibility without stability can actually cause injury. Hypermobile joints need more strength, not more stretch. The majority of students I’ve taught over the last two decades didn’t need to become more bendy—they needed to become stronger, steadier, and more connected to their bodies.
The Real Goal of Yoga
Yoga is not about touching your toes. It’s about changing your life in ways that matter: less pain, more ease, more vitality. It’s about feeling at home in your body.
The Invitation
So if flexibility has been your reason for not heading to yoga class, let’s shift that perspective. Yoga doesn’t require you to twist and contort yourself into poses you fear you might not get out of. It asks you to show up, breathe, and move in a way that supports your body.
All you need to do is start where you are…stiff hamstrings and all. You might just discover that yoga isn’t about how far you can stretch—it’s about how deeply you can live.
